This is brazen, almost, beyond believe... The petrochemical businesses of the USA, and indeed all the rest of the world, continue a tradition of putting profit well ahead of any responsible activity. These are businesses who have always had the means to lead in the conversion of electricity production to renewable resources. They’ve not just refused to do so, they’ve lied and cajoled their way to the use of even more fossil fuel resources. Products that are being produced and utilized that are increasing the threats to humanity, all life on Earth, created by global climate change.
The oil and gas industries of the world have been built, even after they became enormously profitable, with the assistance of taxpayer funded, huge, subsidies. As petrochemical infrastructure along the coasts (including the Gulf Coast of Texas) are threatened with drowning, destruction, by as little as 20 feet of sea level rise, a possibility that they have helped to create, continue to create, they ask for ever more tax payer assistance to battle against the drowning of said industry facilities.
The petrochemical industries, oft as a a part of the American Petroleum Institute (API), support the building of ginormous, AI facilitating, data centers… Data centers that will require existing, and new, fossil fuel burning, electricity generating infrastructure.
I believe that you will find that there are investigations and lawsuits being pursued, against multiple companies in the oil and gas businesses of the world. They, petrochemical: extracting, refining, distributing and sales, etc... have known, for over half a century (based on information gathered by scientists the oil and gas industry employed; among many other scientists) what would happen if, when, enormous amounts of fossil fuels continued to be extracted, processed and burned.
Forensic accountants could document how much taxpayers were bilked to underwrite the destruction wrought by the American Petroleum Institute, and their ilk round the world. Destruction they continue to cause.
I believe that the only way to rectify the problem is for eminent domain to be employed by governments around the world, after the cases against the petrochemical industries have been made in courts around the world.
The API, and it’s ilk, have demonstrated, time and again, that they will not rectify the problems they’ve created.
