Can you say, “eminent domain?”
Energy and water are a priority, and unless the data center avails itself of all of the roofs and acreage on campus for wind and solar to supply all the power needed, it is to be subject to local/state/federal government eminent domain. Renewable power generation will be properly installed to power the entire facility before the infrastructure can be made available for resale.
Water must be supplied only by condensing moisture from the air above the ginormous campus (MIT has that technology, amongst multiple other research and development resources) or the same eminent domain rules apply.
This is to happen by retrofitting all current data centers, and required for all new data centers!
If the dot.bomb of 2000 evaporated investor’s money; see also: your 401K. The current rush to AI will be worse. Why? Because we still have the Internet, after the dot.bomb, the AI bust will leave us with pointless, ginormous, data centers (see: phone company central offices from the 1970s).
AI pushers are trying to build data centers that are the equivalent of a mainframe computer from the 1970s when nearly all of us have more computing power in our hand; a, “phone.”
The AI, used car equivalent, sales forces is basically making shit up...
Calling AGI (artificial general intelligence) & ASI (artificial super intelligence) more intelligent than people is like saying that the smartest person is the person who won the 100 meter dash at a track meet.
Computers translate everything into a string of 1s and 0s, and use those binary digits to perform mathematical calculations at enormously high speeds. It does not, can not, relate those calculations to functional understanding of the world as humans perceive it. Computers can simulate understanding, but until it becomes functionally cognitive in our analog world, it is not ever going to compete with the cognitive ability that is human only.
You need not be a techie geek, I mean that term as a compliment, to understand that AI is not what the sales folks, pushers of their own unenlightened self-interest, are telling everybody.
AI (advanced computer automation) needs progress to be carefully regulated by geeks that do not have a stake in the potential, revenue stream; lack thereof.
